Do you dream of practicing a profession in the service of others and where you will feel useful? The humanitarian is for you. In addition, the sector uses a variety of profiles. But if goodwill is required, it is not enough: NGOs want skilled and competent professionals.

Building a school, launching a micro-finance program, installing irrigation channels, providing legal aid to migrants: henceforth, most of its missions are carried out by humanitarian aid within the framework of development aid. Even if natural disasters and international conflicts still require emergency response. For all these long-term projects, NGOs call upon professionals who are competent in health, of course, but also in economics, logistics, agronomy, law, etc. In addition, organizations need support functions within head offices, such as project management, communication and marketing, management and training.

Humanitarian mission: additional training

Starting as part of a humanitarian mission does not improvise. Initial candidates, be they doctors, nurses, logisticians, teachers or engineers, must not only be able to demonstrate professional competence related to the practice of their profession, but also having specific qualities to this type of mission. Being able to adapt to the environment and to the material conditions on the spot, to be resourceful, to have team spirit, and of course to show great human qualities: humility, listening, benevolence. This is why all these professionals are usually given additional training, given by NGOs, before they can leave.

Specific jobs for humanitarian workers

Often humanitarian missions take place on difficult terrain, call on specialists who do not all speak the same language, face legal problems... To anticipate these problems and ensure that everything goes well, NGOs need project managers on site. Their role is to coordinate the logistical, administrative, financial, legal and human resources aspects of a mission. Positions that require both a practical mind and a good physical condition, but also a spirit of analysis and a knowledge of the issues and the geopolitical context so as not to commit an odd one and give a good chance to the success of the project.
